ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effects of health education based on integrative therapy of Chinese and Western medicine for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) from the aspects of knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP), health-related quality of life (HRQoL), body mass index (BMI) and glucose control.

METHODSPatients were individually randomized into intervention group (receiving integrative education, n=120) and control group (receiving usual education, n=120). The primary outcome was the changes in glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels after 3, 6, 9 and 12 months from baseline. Hierarchical linear models (HLMs) were used to assess within-group changes in outcomes over time and between-group differences in patterns of change. Secondary outcomes were KAP scores, HRQoL scores and BMI after 6 and 12 months, paired-sample t test was used to assess within-group changes in outcomes in 6 and 12 months, independent-sample t test was used to assess between-group differences in patterns of change.

RESULTSHbA1c decreased statistically from baseline to 3 months, from 3 to 6 months, from 6 to 9 months and from 9 to 12 months in the intervention group (all P<0.01); and decreased significantly from baseline to 3 months, and from 3 to 6 months in the control group P<0.01). There was a significant between-group difference from baseline to 3 months (P=0.044), from 6 to 9 months (P<0.01) and from 9 to 12 months (P<0.01). Significant improvements in the intervention group along with significant between-group differences were found in KAP and HRQoL scores respectively (all P<0.05). The number in the intervention group of normal weight increased from 56 at baseline to 81 (6 months), 94 (12 months), the number in the control group were 63 (baseline), 69 (6 months), 70 (12 months), the χof hierarchical analysis of BMI were 6.93 (P=0.075), 10.31 (P=0.016), 15.53 (P<0.01), respectively.

CONCLUSIONHealth education based on integrative therapy of Chinese and Western medicine is beneficial to the control of T2DM and should be recommended for T2DM.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo explore the distribution features of Chinese medical constitutions in different ages population, thus providing scientific evidence of constitution process theory.

METHODSRecruited were 21 948 cases from a survey of Chinese medical constitutions and health conditions in 9 provinces or municipalities across China (including Jiangsu, Anhui, Gansu, Qinghai, Fujian, Beijing, Jilin, Jiangxi, and Henan) from Dec 2005 to Jan 2007. The body constitution type of individual was diagnosed using discriminant analysis on the basis of Chinese medical constitution questionnaire. By using correspondence analysis, the correlation between the general population, genders, ages, and Chinese medical constitution types was studied.

RESULTSConstitutions of yin-deficiency type, wetness-heat type, qi-depression type, and special diathesis type often occurred in the population ranging 15 -24 years old. Gentleness type mostly occurred in the population ranging 25 -44 years old. During this time period, phlegm-wetness type and wetness-heat type were liable to occur in males, while blood-stasis type was liable to occur in females. Qi-deficiency type and yang-deficiency type were most often seen in those older than 45 years. Phlegm-wetness type and blood-stasis type body constitution were also liable to occur in those older than 45 years.

CONCLUSIONSThe distribution features were different in different Chinese medical constitutions. Different constitution types exist in different genders. Different constitution types exist different ages population.

ABSTRACT

The increase of body mass index (BMI) has already been recognized as one of the risk factors for many diseases. However,in patients with various diseases, data from large number of studies shows that when comparing with underweight and normal-weight patients, overweight and obesity have appeared better clinical prognosis, namely "obesity paradox".It has become one of the hot spots in domestic and foreign research areas of the sort. When studying the relationship between BMI and health-related quality of life (HRQoL),we discovered that when BMI was increasing among the elderly or people with chronic diseases,it could predict a better quality of life among these populations. The impairment of HRQoL in chronic disease was not caused by the impact of obesity but by chronic diseases. These evidence triggered the idea that whether higher HRQoL of obesity was the potential mechanisms that leading to a higher survival rate? It also provided a new entry point for searching possible mechanism in which related to the "obesity paradox" that raising new issues on reasonable weight management.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo explore the effects of trichloroethylene (TCE) and its by-products (trichloroacetic acid, TCA; dichloroacetic acid, DCA) on the normal human peripheral blood lymphocyte and the role of DCA in dermatitis medicamentosa- like induced by trichloroethylene (DMLT).

METHODSLymphocyte was isolated from peripheral venous blood, and cytotoxicity of human lymphocytes treated with different concentrations (0.02 approximately 30.00 mmol/L) of DCA was determined at indicated times (2 h and 4 h) based on the MTS assay. Action of DCA on cell viability, membrane integrity was assessed by neutral red uptake (NRU) assay and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release test and measurement of superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. Fluorescence quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (FQ-RT-PCR) was employed for detection and quantization of the chemokine receptor CXCR2 and chemokine receptor CXCR3 mRNA in peripheral blood lymphocyte treated with different concentrations of DCA.

RESULTSDCA had a more vital effect on peripheral blood lymphocyte than TCE and TCA. A concentration-dependent release of LDH was observed at 4 h after cells were exposed to different doses of DCA (0.88, 1.75, 3.50 and 7.00 mmol/L) (P < 0.05), and DCA also caused an inhibition of SOD activity in a concentration-dependent manner (P < 0.05). The results of FQ- RT- PCR indicated that CXCR2 and CXCR3 mRNA were all over- expression. At 48 h after the DCA of 0.5 mmol/L and 10.00 mmol/L was used, CXCR2 and CXCR3 mRNA were 10.34, 5.66-fold and 19.43, 8.75-fold of those in the control group (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONDCA is of a great cytotoxicity and may be one of crucial evocators on DMLT.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo analyse the association between polymorphism in human synaptosomal-associated protein of 25 000 (SNAP-25) gene and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Han Chinese children.

METHODSThe study samples were comprised of 100 integrated ADHD trios (included proband and biological parents) and 97 unrelated controls. Association of polymorphism with ADHD and its subtype was examined by: (1) comparing cases and controls; (2) using family-based association study in transmission disequilibrium test (TDT).

RESULTSCase-control analysis of short tandem repeat (STR) showed that there was no significant difference between the two groups in allele gene frequency and genotype frequency (P > 0.05); TDT analysis of the rs363006 SNP and the rs362549 SNP revealed no association between SNAP-25 polymorphisms and ADHD (P > 0.05). But after a stratification by ADHD subtype, the rs362549 SNP A allele showed a tendency to preferentially transmitted to ADHD-I subtype (chi(2) = 8.00, P < 0.01); and the rs362549 SNP G allele had a tendency to preferentially transmitted to ADHD-C subtype (chi(2) = 4.122, P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONSNo association was found between SNAP-25 polymorphisms and ADHD. There was a possible association between rs362549 SNP polymorphism and ADHD subtypes, but the findings require replication before drawing a definitive conclusion.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinicopathologic characteristics and differential diagnosis of myopericytoma.

METHODSSix cases of myopericytomas were analyzed by light microscopy and immunohistochemistry (LSAB detection method).

RESULTSTumors from 3 females and 3 males were found on the extremities and chest wall. The ages of these 6 patients ranged from 16 to 58 years. Histologically, all tumors were unencapsulated. The neoplastic cells were oval to spindle shaped with eosinophilic cytoplasm, had a myoid appearance and showd areas of concentric perivascular proliferation around lesional blood vessels which were present with focal myxoid stroma. Morphologically in some cases the tumor overlap myofibroma, hemangiopericytoma or glomus tumor. One tumor was located entirely within the lumen of a vein. In another case, the tumor displayed cellular pleomorphism, mitotic activity, necrosis should be diagnosed as malignant myopericytoma. The neoplastic cells were positive for SMA and negative for CD31, CD34, S-100, and CK.

CONCLUSIONSMyopericytoma is composed of oval to spindle shaped myoid cells with a striking tendeny for concentric perivascular growth. These cells differentiate towards perivascular myoid cells or myopericytes. Extremely rare malignant myopericytoma exist.
